From time to time this thing I once heard, springs to to mind and it is as follows:
“There’s Only So Many Sunsets”
I don’t know where I heard this, but it is something that stuck with me.
Of course, what this is referring to is that that we will all only see so many sunsets in our lifetime.
That’s the thing about mortality, there’s only so many opportunities, and the finite nature of it all is what gives life its meaning.
So many of us make the mistake of thinking there will be another opportunity tomorrow, but that is never promised.
The only time we have is right now.
Only so many opportunities to tell someone that you love them.
Only so many opportunities to do ‘that thing’ you’ve been meaning to do, but kept putting it off.
Only so many times you will catch up with friends and laugh.
Only so many times to say the things you really know you should say, but something stops you from doing it.
Only so many times you will go on holiday and apply sunscreen.
Only so many times a gift horse will look you in the mouth.
Only so many sliding door opportunities that come along, which if you miss them, will pass you by like a ship in the night.
Only so many opportunities to tell someone what they mean to you.
Only so many opportunities to ask someone a question you really want to know the answer to.
Before it’s too late…
In the quiet moments I think about some of these things. It makes time seem more precious.
Day to day, people get so hung up on things of very little importance, but they ignore what really matters.
We all do it because we get wrapped up in the demands of day to day living.
“Coulda, shoulda, woulda are the last words of a fool”
This reminds of a line I heard in a film called Dead Poets Society, which I watched
when it came out at the cinema. It is in my top 10 films of all time:
“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”
So much wisdom in a film quote. For me, nothing has ever topped this in a film and for some
people who saw it and acted upon the advice, it would have changed their lives forever.
For the rest of us, let’s start today.
Thanks for reading and if I’m still rattling around on the mortal coil, I’ll see you in the next one.
Let’s play this one out with Remember Me by Blue Boy…
