When I was a kid, I read more than my share of fantasy books.
You’d often find me walking through a wardrobe into Narnia or imagining
what it was like to cast my own spell. Kids do imagination better than adults
ever could and I was all about the magic I could create with my thoughts.
In many ways, I still am.
Somewhere along the way, most of us forget how to keep that magic alive.
If we’re not careful, as we get older, we’re all in danger of losing all that
and seeing life in black and white. Heaven forbid!
It is for this reason, sometimes we all need to be reminded that magic
does exist because it’s already there inside of us, if only we dared to
believe it’s so real that you can reach out and touch it…
…with nothing more than your mind! (that’s all you actually need)
Which brings me to a wonderful film I think everyone should
watch if they haven’t seen it…
It’s called Bridge to Terabithia. I put it on one day by accident while
I was flicking through the channels. At first I dismissed it as a kids film
(nothing wrong with that either, by the way) but something stopped me
from changing the channel over again.
What Is The Bridge To Terabithia About Then, Genius?
Well, I don’t want to give you too many spoilers, so you’ll have to go and
watch it for yourself if you haven’t already, but in a nutshell it’s a coming-of-age
story about two kids called Jess and Leslie, who feel like outsiders in
their daily lives.
Terabithia is a place where they can escape things like school, troubles at home,
and the sense of never quite fitting in.
To get to Terabithia they must cross a narrow rope bridge, which is
frightening enough to put off casual ‘bridge crossing types’.
The bridge itself is literal and they must physically cross it.
I love this kind of thing, so I was already hooked. Give me a bridge
to get to somewhere magical and I’m there with my boots blacked.
On the surface, it’s just a precarious bridge. But it’s also a metaphor for trust,
courage, and the willingness to take emotional risks.
Yes, dear reader – The Bridge to Terabithia is a layered affair.
It’s all about those beautiful things we hold sacred. Friendship,
shared experience, imagination and hidden worlds we build with others
that can change us forever.
I’m not going to spoil it for you now if you haven’t seen it, but let’s
just say it’s worth getting across the bridge because EVERYTHING
feels different there.
Their secret world only existed because both of them kept showing up,
choosing to bring it to life together
Beyond the bridge is a magical place, which is their own private
escape that that only they truly understand.
I had better stop there before I enter huge spoiler territory.
If you want to watch a film about the wonder of childhood and how
magic exists between two people as long as they both believe and
keep showing up to cross the bridge, this is one for you.
It’s a beautiful thing so go and watch it already 🙂
Thanks for reading, have a great day and I’ll see ya
in the next one.
Or… I may meet you at the bridge, in which case I will
see you in Terabithia.
Let’s play this one out with Fairground by Simply Red (love this, it
was also my nans favourite song in the history of the world).
It seemed fitting to close with this one…
